Considering the fact that the community of women in Dortmund gets even more diverse with the daily recording of new refugees and the issue of respecting and implementing women's rights becomes more topical than ever. With the theme "Give women more space" it was important for us as part of the International Women's Week to reduce prejudices.
We started on Monday, 07/03/2016, with a lecture on women's rights in Islam, which helped to eliminate misunderstandings and common prejudices so creating a way to deal respectfully with each other.
The following day we visited with 15 other women, to the exhibition "Violence against Women and Girls" in the Women's Museum Bonn. After the tour, we shared the many impressions of the museum with coffee and cake.
The next day brought us a relaxing evening. We watched the film "Life, Above All" by Oliver Schmitz: A film about the seemingly lost the fight against AIDS in Africa, it narrated on exclusion and friendship, superstition and dignity.
Also relaxed proceeded Thursday with the workshop "Paint your stress away!", Where the women’s creativity had no limits. Participants grappled with the issue of stress management to their daily lives continue to decelerate and their wants and needs to be clear again.
In the cooking competition on Friday it said: Run to the kitchen, let's cook, eat together and also by overcoming prejudices. A culinary delight for all and at the same time a tasteful journey through Africa. The winners of the cooking competition Grace O. and Karima B. They both got an instant wellness gift.
For the grand finale of our action week we brought together women in politics. Dr. Monika Goldmann, Kati Stüdemann, Saziye Altundal-Köse and Andrea Weber spoke uplifting words about Participation.
In our balloon launch, participants wrote down their wishes and dreams for women on postcards that have been attached to the balloon, to make them rise. This made the official conclusion of the International Women's Week.
Two women then had the opportunity to slip into garments from our label "Impress" and to experience the touch of a professional make-up artist. The celebration ended with food and entertainment.
We thank all participants, contributors and organisers for such a rewarding week.
